Ovid’s themes often accompany a violent transformation in an idyllic landscape.

Among the works on paper is a series of pencil drawings on pale pink paper named the Metamorphoses drawings after Ovid’s mythical tales. Barney depicts extreme landscapes in violent contrasts between nature and technology, often showing a marked formal incongruity. They are about encounters between figures and landscapes, as well as the technical equipment used to survey the landscape. Their colour palette refers to the forest fires and the colours of the sky in the region in Idaho where Redoubt was flamed. The drawings shown combine pencil and gouache on coloured paper in polyethylene frames made by the artist. Drawing plays a major role in his oeuvre, with the medium functioning both preparatory, in the form of sketches in the planning phase of a film or exhibition project, and as a supporting pillar of his artistic expressiveness, which has been of great importance from the beginning of his career until today. The title transforms Barney’s statement that Redoubt is a portrait of a place, in all its complexity, its beauty and its ugliness.īarney works in clear series developed over several years, creating works that combine sculptural installations with performance, video, sculpture, printmaking and drawing. The exhibition is named after Ruby Ridge, the site of a deadly confrontation between a separatist’s family and American Federal Police, an incident that caused a stir in North Idaho in the 1990s. All of the works draw on the visual language of the film, which is set in the remote Sawtooth Mountains of Idaho and explores such wide-ranging themes as cosmology, American frontier myths and the role of artistic production.
